Events have been taking place to mark the start of Science Week, with thousands attending an exhibition celebrating technology and innovation in Galway.

It's one of a number of activities planned between now and next Sunday, as part of an ongoing effort to encourage careers in the sector.

The theme for this year’s Science Week is what it means to be human in today’s world and how the decisions we make today will impact the future.

With that in mind, there was a particular focus on captivating the minds of the younger attendees at today’s event in Galway.

Crowds flocked to the fair from early this morning, where a range of displays, demonstrations and activities awaited more than 20,000 participants.

The Galway Science and Technology Fair is one of 15 free-to-attend festivals around the country over the next week, with organisers promising something for all ages and interests.

The overall aim is to get people to engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - the so-called STEM subjects - that drive innovation, bring practical solutions to everyday problems and contribute significantly to the country’s economy.
