Consumers in Ireland bought 619 million eggs in the 12 months to July this year, according to Bord Bia, the Irish food marketing board.

The number represents a 16% increase in egg sales in the period, amounting to €172m.

Based on an analysis of figures from data company Kantar, Bord Bia found that 89% of households purchase eggs once a month.

"Its clear from the research that eggs have never been more popular, and for good reason, as they offer unrivalled versatility and are a great source of nutrition for all the family," said Rachel Doyle, Bord Bia Marketing Manager.

"This World Egg Day, we're encouraging consumers to seek out and purchase eggs with the Bord Bia Quality Mark," Ms Doyle said.

"By choosing eggs with the Quality Mark, consumers can trust that they have been produced to the highest Bord Bia standards which are verified at every stage," she added.
